Burundi

Since its independence in 1962, Burundi has been suffering a long-standing series of violent coups d'états and massacres between the Hutu majority and Tutsi minority. In particular, renewed outbreaks of violence broke out in 1993, which originated a civil war causing more than 300,000 victims. Lately, a number of agreements and ceasefires, as well as democratic elections in 2008, reestablished a certain degree of stability, but the social conditions and the limited rule of law still make arduous to render justice to the victims.

In October 2009, TRIAL entered into a partnership with ITEKA, the Burundi League for Human Rights, so as to combine their respective expertise in order to help victims obtain redress in the most efficient way.
