| | | | Aleksandar Medic was arrested in June 2005, days after the video footage was shown at the trial of former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic at The Hague. The Prosecutor brought charges against him and four other indictees (Medic’s brothers Slobodan and Branislav Medic, Pero Petrasevic, and Aleksandar Vukov, see „related cases“) in October 2005.
Their trial began on 20 December 2005 at the Belgrade District Court's War Crimes Council.
On the first day of the trial, Aleksandar Medic admitted that the members of the unit had in fact murdered the captured Bosniaks, but that he had not participated in the murders personally. He said that the commander of ‚Scorpions’, Slobodan Medic, ordered the transfer of five to six Bosniak prisoners by trucks from Trnovo, but that he does not know what their destination was.
Medic admitted to have been with the prisoners in the truck, but after they had been taken down, he had got held up while following them. He claimed he suddenly heard shots fired and saw a fellow soldier, who goes by "Djole Siptar", firing at the prisoners, while Petrasevic and Branislav Medic had their rifles pointed at those people.
Medic claimed to have been shocked by this incident, adding that he did not fire.
According to Aleksandar Medic, Petrasevic after the killings reported to the ‚Scorpions’ commander and said that the order had been carried out and that the “packages” had been terminated.
The Defense lawyers demanded that the video footage be excluded from the court material, as it was obviously not the original but a copy, which according to the law could not be considered evidence.
Medic was found guilty of violations of customs of war by the Belgrade War Crimes Chamber on 10 April 2007 and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. | | click for more... | | Trial Watch would like to remind its users that any person charged by national or international authorities is presumed innocent until proven guilty. | | | | | last time seen : | | | Belgrade (Serbia and Montenegro) | | | period of charges : | | | 16.07.1995 - 17.07.1995 | | | judgement period : | | | 20.12.2005 | | | charges : | | | Crimes against humanity War crimes | | | profile last modified : | | | 24.06.2007 |
