facts legal procedure
At the end of the war, Kenji Dohihara was arrested and imprisoned in Sugamo for detention prior to being brought before the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, set up by Allied forces. He was accused of the following counts:

-- No. 1: responsibility for the outbreak of wars of aggression and wars in violation of international law,
-- No. 27: war of aggression against China,
-- No. 29: war of aggression against the USA,
-- No. 31: war of aggression against the British Commonwealth,
-- No. 32: war of aggression against the Netherlands,
-- No. 33: war of aggression against France,
-- No. 35 and 36: war of aggression against the USSR,
-- No. 54: authorisation of violations of the laws or customs of war,
-- No. 55: failure to take all appropriate measures to enforce compliance and to prevent violations of conventions and laws and customs of war.

During the examination of his guilt, the Prosecutor reported extensive evidence of maltreatment of prisoners of war, with many dying of malnutrition. The defence attempted to justify this on the grounds of poor conditions of supply and communication. However, the Indictment showed that Japanese troops did not suffer the same problems of supply and proved that such ill-treatment was in fact the result of a policy pursued by Dohihara.

On 12th November 1948, Kenji Dohihara was found guilty of charges No. 1, 27, 29, 31, 32, 35, 36 and 54 but not guilty on the remaining charges.

He was sentenced to death by hanging.

Kenji Dohihara was executed on 23rd December 1948 at Sugamo prison.
