On the 18th of July 2007, the prosecutors of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC, see “spotlight’’), announced that they deposited before the Chambers the files of five suspects. They are susceptible to be tried for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The files were examined by the co-investigating judges of the ECCC.
The co-prosecutors declared in a press release that they have indentified and presented before the co-investigating judges 25 distinct charges of murder, torture, forced transfer, illegal detention, forced labour and religious, political and ethnic persecutions.

On November 14th, Khieu Samphan was hospitalized for high blood pressure.

On the 19th of November 2007, Khieu Samphan left the building escorted by police.
He was brought before the office of the co-investigating judges of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia in execution of an arrest warrant. An initial appearance was held that same day. The Co-Investigating Judges charged Khieu Samphan with crimes against humanity and war crimes. Following an adversarial hearing, the Co-Investigating Judges deliberated and decided to order his provisional detention.

Before Khieu Samphan, four leaders of the former ultra-communist regime were also called before the ECCC, namely Guek Eav Kaing alias Duch, Nuon Chea, leng Sary (see “related cases” ) and his wife Ieng Thirith. Historians also evoke Meas Muth. The judges examining the files – one Cambodian and one foreigner— will decide who amongst the suspects can be judged. The trials are set to start in 2008.
