factslegal procedure
Alberto Fujimori was born on 28 July 1938 in Lima into a family of Japanese immigrants. His educational background was as an agricultural engineer and he also obtained a masters in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin. After having been dean of the Faculty of Science at the National University of Agriculture from 1984 to 1989, he founded a political party (Cambio 90).

He was elected President of the Republic on 28 July 1990. He exercised this function until 20 November 2000, at which date he announced his resignation, from Japan, following on a series of scandals discrediting his government. However the Congress refused to accept his resignation and announced his removal from office the following day. Alberto Fujimori decided therefore to seek refuge in Japan, where he obtained nationality.

The crimes with which Alberto Fujimori was charged, are mainly related the activities of the Colina Group, a paramilitary death squadron. In particular, this group was accused of executing 15 civilians, including an 8 year old child, in 1991 in the Barrios Altos district of Lima. It was also said to be responsible for the disappearance of 9 students from the University of La Cantuta and of one of their professors in 1992. It was also reported to be linked to the kidnapping, torture and execution of Mariela Lucy Barreto, whose body was found decapitated in March 1997.

The Colina Group was under the direct supervision of Vladimir Montesinos who, at the time, was advisor to the President and the de facto head of the country’s secret service. Alberto Fujimori is suspected of being the intellectual force behind the group’s activities.

In addition to the judicial proceedings opened against Alberto Fujimori for unlawful enrichment and misappropriation of public funds, the former President of Peru was charged on 5 September 2001 with murder, causing serious bodily harm and forced disappearance.
