Anton Lekaj was born in 1980. He was a member of the military police forces within the Kosovo Liberation Army (UCK). The UCK came on the scene during in 1996 and used violent methods in order to gain control of the region of Kosovo – an autonomous Serbian province – and in order to expulse all non-Albanian inhabitants.

According to the indictment, the events occurred in June 1999, during the conflict between the Yugoslav Army and the Serbian police forces on one side, and armed military units of the UCK on the other side, within the context of the conflict between the armed forces of the former Yugoslavia and NATO.

It is alleged that on June 12th, Anton Lekaj and other members of the UCK unlawfully captured 13 persons attending a Roma wedding ceremony in the city of Dakovica. The persons were detained and tortured for three to four hours in a factory reception room before being transferred to premises in the Pastrik Hotel where they were held for four days. During that time, Anton Lekaj and other members of the UCK allegedly tortured them, beating them with wooden sticks, extinguishing burning cigarettes on their body, and generally maiming or mutilating them. It is also alleged that during their detention, the victims were subjected to inhumane and degrading treatment and sexual abuse, including rape. One of the victims was stabbed to death.

It is alleged that during the evening of 14 June 1999, orders were issued for Anton Lekaj‘s group to release six of the victims and that during the night of 15 June they transferred the remaining victims to a different place where three persons were allegedly killed.

Anton Lekaj was arrested in August 2004 in Montenegro during investigations into a case of car theft and subsequently transferred to Serbia in 2005.
