| | | | Augusto Pinochet Ugarte was born on 25 November 1915.
General Pinochet came to power after the 11 September 1973 coup, which overthrew President Salvador Allende. He created and headed a military junta, declared a state of siege, introduced martial law, dissolved the Parliament, censored the media and got rid of all leftist opposition. An official report stated that 3197 people were killed and 967 disappeared during the 17 years of Pinochet's presidency.
In 1980 a new constitution came into force scheduling a presidential plebiscite with Pinochet as unique candidate in 1988. Yet an overwhelming majority did not elect Pinochet, and therefore presidential elections with several candidates were held in 1989. In 1990 Pinochet handed over power to his successor but kept his post of Commander-in –Chief of the army until 1998. Subsequently, he was nominated senator for life, a function he had to quit in 2002 for health reasons.
General Pinochet was accused of participating in “Operation Condor” , a secret plan organised by some South American dictators in the 70s and 80s, which coordinated the repressive action of the secret services of South America's dictatorships (Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile). Their aim was to eliminate all their political opponents abroad.
In addition to other charges, Pinochet was suspected of being the mastermind behind the murder of 75 opponents in several Chilean cities, who were killed by a military unit between September and October 1973 (a case known as "the Death Caravan"). He was also suspected of knowing about operations led by the DINA (National Intelligence Directorate, the Intelligence Chilean Agency) and its role in the implementation of “Operation Condor”.
Three sets of legal proceedings were instituted against Efrain Rios Montt: one in Chile, another in Great Britain and a third one in France (see “related cases”). | | click for more... | | Trial Watch would like to remind its users that any person charged by national or international authorities is presumed innocent until proven guilty. | | | | | nationality : | | | Chile | | | date of birth : | | | 25.11.1915 | | | last time seen : | | | Santiago (Chili) | | | period of charges : | | | 11.09.1973 - 14.12.1990 | | | judgement period : | | | 11.1998 | | | charges : | | | Forced disappearances Torture | | | profile last modified : | | | 18.02.2010 |
