Emilio Eduardo Massera was born in Parana, Argentina on 19th October 1925. He started studying at the Military Navy School from 2nd February 1942 till December 1946. He will go on studying at the Interamerican Defence College in Washington where he will learn about "anti-subversive war". Emilio Massera will later become commandant of the frigate ARA Libertad then commandant of the Navy fleet. On 23rd August 1974, under Peron's presidency he will be awarded the rank of Admiral and becomes Chief Commandant of the Navy. He will hold these functions until September 1978.

On 24th March, a military junta headed by Jorge R. Videla seizes the power with a coup. They will lead the country until 10th December 1983. The junta is first composed of Videla, Navy Commandant Admiral Emilio E. Massera and Air Force Commandant Sergeant General Ramon Agosti. Massera will stay with the junta until 16th September 1978.

During this time, which will be later called the "dirty war", the Argentinian junta endeavours to finish off the country's guerrillas and to eradicate what the junta calls "the subversive thought" as well as the "terrorists", that is to say "anybody who propagates ideas opposed to western and Christian civilisation". The following years, the junta kill or make disappear 10 000 to 30 000 people. At the same time, about 500 000 political opponents must go into exile to escape repression.

Many hundreds of secret detention centres are opened in the country, the most regrettably well known is the "Escuela Superior de Mecanica de la Armada", the ESMA in Buenos Aires where Massera was the official. There, torture is systematically practiced. It's also there that numerous prisoners are assassinated and disappear. The young women who give birth in these centres have their children taken away. The children are then given to army families with false documents.

Finally during the year 1983 the military regime is weakened by its stinging defeat against the British army during the Falklands war. It gives way to a civil government democratically elected with radical Raul Alfonsin for president.
