factslegal procedurecontext
Gérard Ntakirutimana in all probability was born in 1957 in Ngoma in the Kibuye Prefecture of Rwanda. At the time of the events, he was a doctor in the hospital of the “Mugonero Complex” in Ngoma. The Complex was under the direction of the Association of the Seventh Day Adventists and was made up of several buildings, including a nursing school, a hospital and halls of residence.

Between April and June 1994, Gérard Ntakirutimana was said to have instigated and participated in murders in the regions of Mugonero and Biserero. Of particular note, on 16 April 1994, he reportedly participated in the attack on the “Muganero Complex” where civilian Tutsis had taken refuge. Several hundreds of them were killed during this attack. More precisely, it was confirmed that Gérard Ntakirutimana had himself killed one of these victims, Charles Ukobizaba, by shooting him on the chest at point blank range.

Moreover, between April and June 1994, Gérard Ntakirutimana allegedly participated in several attacks in the Biserero region, which accounted for several deaths. In particular, Gérard Ntakirutimana was reported to have slain a Tutsi civilian named Esdras during an attack on the Gitwe primary school.

Gérard Ntakirutimana was arrested on 29 October 1996 in the Ivory Coast and transferred to the prison quarters of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha on 30 November 1996.
