factslegal procedure
Zoran Tomić was born on 2 August 1971. He was a member of the Special Police Force of the Second Šekovići Detachment. Tomić is alleged to have taken part in the search of villages in Srebrenica with the objective of locating Bosniak civilians, forcing them out of their homes and transporting them to Potočari, where they were forcibly and permanently transferred to territories under the control of the Serbian Army.

The region of Srebrenica was a key battleground during the Bosnia conflict, with many civilian fatalities. Bosnian Muslims gathered in the municipality’s centrally located town, which became a UN Protected Zone. The town was subsequently captured by the Serbian Army. It is estimated that 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were massacred.

It is alleged by the Prosecutor that Zoran Tomić and the Second Squad Šekovici Detachment detained and later executed over 1,000 civilian Bosniak men in a warehouse in Kravica, near Srebrenica. It is alleged that Zoran Tomić, together with other members of the 2nd Detachment, fired on the Bosniaks with an automatic rifle, while other members of the 2nd Detachment also shot from firearms and threw bombs at the captured civilians.

Together with other members of the Unit, including Vaso Todorovic (see “related cases”), Zoran Tomić is therefore alleged to have participated in the genocide of 1,000 Bosnian Muslim men in Srebrenica during the period 10th July 1995 to 19th July 1995. Zoran Tomić is also accused of being a knowing participant in the joint criminal enterprise of the genocide that occurred during that period.

Since the end of the war, Zoran Tomić worked for the Bosnian Serb police until his suspension in 2007 due to his alleged involvement in the commission of war crimes.

On 3 June 2008, the Special Department for War Crimes of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia Herzegovina ordered the arrest of Zoran Tomić on allegations of Genocide, stemming from his actions as a police officer in Srebrenica in 1995.
