Found guilty of genocide and direct and public incitement to commit genocide and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment on 22 June 2009, an appeal has been launched
Callixte Kalimanzira surrendered voluntarily to the ICTR in Arusha, Tanzania, on 8 November 2005.
According to the indictment filed on 21 July 2005, Kalimanzira was charged on three counts: “genocide” or in the alternative “complicity in genocide” as well as “direct and public incitement to commit genocide”
On 14 November 2005, at his initial court appearance before the Second Trial Chamber, Kalimanzira pleaded not guilty on all three counts.
Kalimanzira was transferred to the United Nations prison quarters of the ICTR on 8 November 2005.
The trial opened on 5 May 2008.The prosecution concluded its case on 30 June 2008, after calling 24 witnesses.
The case for the defence was closed on 11 February 2009 after the testimony furnished by the 43rd witness.
The closing arguments began on 20 April 2009.
On 22 June 2009, the Trial Chamber found Kalimanzira guilty of genocide and direct and public incitement to commit genocide and sentenced him to 30 years imprisonment.
