facts legal procedure
François Karera was arrested in Kenya on 20 October 2001 and transferred to the UN penitentiary quarter of the ICTR in Arusha, Tanzania, the following day.

The indictment against him contains four counts:
- genocide (article 2 paragraph 3 (a) of the ICTY statute), or alternatively
- complicity in genocide (article 2 paragraph 3 (e) of the ICTY statute)
- crime against humanity: persecution (article 3 (b) of the ICTY statute), or alternatively
- crime against humanity: murder (article 3 (a) of the ICTY statute)

On 26 October 2001 he appeared before the third Trial Chamber and pleaded not guilty on all counts.

His trial began on January 9, 2006.

On February 2, 2006, the Prosecutor rested his case. Seventeen witnesses have been called, heard and cross-examined. The defence began its case in May 2007.

On 7 December 2007 Karera was found guilty of genocide, crimes against humanity, murder and extermination. He was acquitted of complicity for genocide.

The Trial Chamber of the Tribunal considered as aggravating circumstances the promise of protection he had made to tutsi refugees who had sought refuge at the church of Ntarama the evening before an attack in which he took part.

Karera was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Karera appealed the decision. An appeals hearing is scheduled to take place on 28 August 2008.
