Slobodan Medic was arrested in June 2005, days after the video footage was shown at the trial of former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic at The Hague. The Prosecutor brought charges against him and four other indictees (Medic’s brothers Aleksandar and Branislav Medic, Pero Petrasevic, and Aleksandar Vukov, see „related cases“) in October 2005.
Their trial began on 20 December 2005 at the Belgrade District Court's War Crimes Council.
On the first day of the trial, Slobodan Medic insisted that he did not order the killings. However, he said he could not control soldiers who wanted to avenge family members killed by Muslims. He added that had he known that the video footage would become public, he would have "killed like a rabbit" the Serb soldier who filmed the killings.
The Defense lawyers demanded that the video footage be excluded from the court material, as it was obviously not the original but a copy, which according to the law could not be considered evidence.
on 10 April 2007 the Serbian War Crimes Court sentenced Medic to 20 years imprisonment for violation of the laws and customs of war.
