|  | |  | The trial against the “Butare Four” represents the first trial in Belgium to apply the 1993 law against war crimes which inscribed the principle of Universal Jurisdiction into Belgian law. It is only since 1999 however, that this law provides for a sanction for genocide and crimes against humanity, this being after the complaint against the “Butare Four” had been filed. For this reason, only the dispositions relating to war crimes could be applied.
