Jean-Pierre Bemba is the first person to be arrested in connection with the situation in Central African Republic (CAR).

The CAR, which ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in October 2001, referred the crimes committed on its territory since 2002 to the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC in December 2004. The Prosecutor made the decision to open an investigation into this situation on May 22, 2007.

The crimes committed in the CAR are characterised by the high number of rapes reported. According to figures of some NGOs, over 1000 victims have been identified, including 480 women and girls raped (Ocodefad).
