The three most significant facts in Kambanda's trial are the following:

1) The trial is marked by the unprecedented acknowledgment of a first head of government's direct participation in the genocide: "All Rwandans, Hutu, Tutsi and Twa need to tell each other the truth, all the truth on their life together, their cohabitation yesterday, today and tomorrow. (…) The mask they have always worn has now fallen…" (See Extract of Jean Kambanda's declaration through the Prosecutor's Office on Kambanda's first appearance on 1st May 1998).

2) Jean Kambanda is the first Head of government to plead guilty of genocide (in exchange for a demand to ensure safety for his wife and two children). He acknowledged the existence of the genocide and admitted that it was organised beforehand.

3) The sentence against him is the first condemnation for the crime of genocide since the adoption of the Genocide Convention in 1948.
