For the first time, the Federal Supreme Court decided that the principle of universal jurisdiction was not only applicable to genocide, but also to individual mistreatment and deprivation of liberty. The court referred to the fourth 1949 Geneva Convention which is dedicated to the protection of the civilian population in times of war and which requires Germany to prosecute crimes like torture, inhuman treatment or unlawful deprivation of liberty.
